Boris Johnson said he contemplated not self-isolating after discovering that Sajid Javid tested positive for Covid.

But he said in a Twitter video that it was ‘far more important that everybody sticks to the same rules’ and decided to stay at home after being ‘pinged’ by NHS Test and Trace.

It means that the prime minister and Chancellor Rishi Sunak will be isolating for Freedom Day on Monday.

The PM said: ‘We did look briefly into the idea of us taking part in the pilot scheme which allows people to test daily, but I think it’s far more important that everybody sticks to the same rules.

‘That’s why I’m going to be self-isolating until the 26th of July.

‘I really do urge everybody to stick with the programme and take the appropriate course of action when you’re asked to do so by NHS Test and Trace.’
