ITV announced the 55-year-old’s departure from GMB on Tuesday, after his rant about Meghan Markle’s comments on her mental health racked up 41,000 Ofcom complaints.
Co-host Susanna Reid was joined by Ranvir Singh on today’s instalment, leading to ‘#BringBackPiers’ trending on the social media platform.
However, some couldn’t resist the opportunity to have some fun with the hashtag, flooding it with snaps of their favourite seaside structures.
Sharing a glorious upload of Brighton Pier, one penned: ‘We should definitely #bringbackpiers – for fun, fishing, and fresh air.’
‘#bringbackpiers why are they getting rid of piers wtf I quite like this one,’ another joked.
A fan recalled: ‘Penarth Pier is one of my favourite places. I don’t go there very often nowadays, but it always reminds me of day trips with my grandparents. #bringbackpiers.’
Alongside an idyllic photo of the Bournemouth attraction, a follower commented: ‘#bringbackpiers Support Local Piers!’
‘The #bringbackpiers hashtag is fantastic so I’m adding to it,’ a Twitter user said. ‘I know it’s still there but since I’m from Southend, I’d like to bring the pier back to me as I used to love walking it #SouthendOnSeaPier.’
One switched things up with a gif of Kanye West, adding: ‘Imagining @piersmorgan waking up to see #bringbackpiers is trending and then realising it’s just pictures of actual piers.’
Speaking outside his London home this morning, before walking his daughter to school, the presenter described his exit as ‘amicable’, telling reporters: ‘I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree.
‘I’m just going to take it easy and see how we go.
‘I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion.
‘If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right.
‘I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.
‘If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly-held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.’
He added: ‘I think it’s fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they’ve cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.
‘I would call it a temporary hibernation.’
The presenter left the ITV morning show following a backlash against his comments about Meghan and her headline-making interview
In the bombshell chat, the Duchess told Oprah that there were times she ‘just didn’t want to be alive anymore’.
She then claimed that she asked ‘the institution’ for help, but was refused psychiatric treatment.
The following day, he fumed about the footage, asking: ‘Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle.
‘I wouldn’t believe it if she read me weather report. The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our Royal family I think is contemptible.’
ITV bosses later released a statement on Tuesday evening, announcing his exit.
‘Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,’ it read.
‘ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.’
