‘Comforting having him back’ – Michael Owen hails Liverpool star who makes Jurgen Klopp’s side ‘feel safe’

Michael Owen has heaped praise on Liverpool star Fabinho following his commanding return to midfield on Wednesday.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez missing a large portion of the 2020-21 season through injury, with Joel Matip recently joining the pair on the sidelines, Fabinho has often been deployed at centre-half this term.

But he started his first game since October in the middle of the park against RB Leipzig on Thursday as Jurgen Klopp opted for the partnership of Ozan Kabak and Nat Phillips in defence.

The Brazilian turned in an excellent man of the match display in his natural role to help his side ease into the Champions League quarter-finals – with Owen highlighting post-match how reassured the rest of the Liverpool side looks with Fabinho in the middle.

‘It is so comforting watching him,’ Owen said on BT Sport. ‘When he is in the middle you feel safe.

‘It is so comforting having him back in his right position.

‘It is just how you want a sitting midfielder, he covers the back two which is the weak part of the team.’

Rio Ferdinand was also impressed with the 27-year-old’s performance, adding: ‘He gives the defenders confidence because he stops the ball getting into the strikers, he cuts off the lines,’ he said.

‘So it lets the defenders drop off a little bit to stop the ball in behind because they are not worried about the ball to feet.’
