A dad was slashed in the stomach and repeatedly punched in the face by two thieves who tried to snatch his family’s nine-month-old puppy.

Amputee Andy Garside was out walking French Bulldog Lilo in Tameside, Greater Manchester, when he was targeted by the pair on Tuesday evening.

The 39-year-old – whose leg was removed after a number of unsuccessful surgeries to deal with tendon damage – noticed the two younger men following him.

His wife Stacey said ‘he didn’t think anything of it at first’ as there were lots of people out and about, ‘but as he went around he could see they were waiting for him’.

She said the duo approached her husband, with one saying: ‘That’s a sick dog that – can we pick it up?’

Andy managed to pull Lilo back after noticing she was ‘getting a bit nervous’.

But things quickly took a nasty turn when the pair lunged at the dad-of-three, repeatedly punching him in the face before one of the would-be thieves pulled out what he thinks was a Stanley knife and wounded him in the stomach.

Stacey, 41, told the Manchester Evening News: ‘Andy was wearing shorts, and I think they targeted him thinking it was going to be an easy steal to take a high-value dog.

‘They didn’t expect him to fight them off. They scuffled for a bit before one said “just leave it now”, and they ran off towards the new-builds on the estate.

‘Andy picked the dog up and went back the way he came. He knocked on somebody’s door for help, and they gave him a towel as he was bleeding quite heavily.’

After dropping Lilo home, he called the police and then went to A&E to get treatment for a broken nose – which will require surgery to fix – as well as the wounds to his arms and stomach.

Stacey said: ‘He has got concussion and his face is a bit of a mess. Lilo was traumatised, the poor thing.

‘My friend and her husband came round to check we were OK. As they came in through the door Lilo ran through the living room making the most awful scream – she was that scared.’

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it is investigating the attack.

A spokesman said: ‘Police were called to Cheriton Close in Hyde just before 6pm on Tuesday (June 8) to reports a 39-year-old man had been assaulted while walking his dog.

‘The man reported being approached by two men who were wielding a knife. They assaulted him and attempted to take the dog. The man suffered injuries to his face, arms and body.

‘Inquiries are ongoing, and officers are keen to speak to anyone who may witnessed anything.’
