For decades, basketball and cartoon fans alike were waiting for the sequel of Space Jam. Now, it’s finally on theatres with LeBron James taking on the big screen next to the TuneSquad.
But even though the movie was just recently released, there’s already some discussion going on about whether to add a follow-up film or not.
According to director Malcolm D. Lee, he’s not closed to the possibility of developing a third movie of the saga, but it’ll all depend on how the fans respond because finding a new star will be quite difficult:
“I never say never,” director Malcolm D. Lee told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s all going to be about whether the fans respond to this positively. But I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports. Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you’ve got to find a script and story that’s good enough to not repeat what’s been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going.”
As a matter of fact, the director added that he could find his new star outside of the basketball world, citing Dwayne ‘The Rock’ johnson as a possibility:
“Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice,” said the director. “It would be different. I’m not exactly sure what his skillset would be, maybe he goes back to wrestling. That might be interesting.”
Long after his days as a WWE star, Johnson has become one of Hollywood’s most popular actors, starring in countless movies, the Fast and the Furious saga, and HBO’s Ballers.
He may not exactly be as tall as some NBA players but he could still give the bad guys a hard time. That’s not the kind of guy you want to go against, that’s for sure.
