Alf (Ray Meagher), Roo (Georgie Parker) and Martha (Belinda Giblin) have recently had a huge showdown with Martha’s estranged son Kieran (Rick Donald), who came to the Bay wanting to reconnect with his mother but still struggling with alcoholism and violent tendencies.
Following a disastrously short stint working at the gym, he returned to his old drinking habits and was quickly found out by Roo and Alf. However, when the pair confronted him he lunged at Alf before fleeing to the caravan and packing his belongings.
By the time the police arrived, saying a warrant was already out for his arrest, a weeping Martha revealed Kieran was long gone – and quickly turned against Roo and Alf, blaming them for her son’s hasty departure.
The Summer Bay house becomes a tense residence, with Martha giving her husband and daughter the cold shoulder. Alf tries to appeal to her, but she responds by saying she’ll be heading back to Merimbula.
Roo tries to reason with Martha next, and she eventually concedes she overreacted. However, when Alf comes home to call a truce, Roo realises Martha is missing.
Elsewhere, Irene (Lynne McGranger) is heading home from a shift at the Diner when Martha leaps out of the shadows and begs her for help. Irene struggles to calm her down, and she frantically tells her that Roo and Alf are keeping her prisoner…
