Martin Keown says Mikel Arteta was too ’emotional’ in Tottenham win

Martin Keown says Mikel Arteta is still guilty of getting ‘too emotional’ in games when it comes to game management.

Keown praised Arsenal’s ability to press from the front against Tottenham in Sunday’s north London derby, highlighting it as the key area where the Gunners have improved under the Spaniard.

The former defender however admitted Arsenal invited pressure upon themselves in the last 15 minutes of the game where Spurs were denied an equaliser when Harry Kane struck the post, with Gabriel also making a goal-saving block.

Arsenal were guilty of giving away set pieces in that closing period with Keown claiming there were some rash decisions as they attempted to close the game out, an issue the manager may also have to improve upon.

‘As well as Arteta has done, you talk about them being a young team who become emotional, I thought he [Arteta] was as well, Keown told BT Sport ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Benfica.

‘It’s about him stepping back and making sure he enforces the same rules and blueprint he wants for the team, not just at the beginning but at the end of games as well.

‘Be really tough on the players.

‘Willian came on, [Emile] Smith Rowe went off in that situation in the last 15 mins and four of the six shots Spurs had came in those last 15 minutes when they were a man down.

‘That tells you the team starts do to things in a different manner and they need to get back to those basic roles.’
