Netflix has released a new trailer for upcoming true crime documentary series The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness.

The new series is set to re-examine David Berkowitz’s infamous murder spree in 70s New York, while exploring the idea that the killer did not act alone.

Berkowitz is one of the most infamous killers in US history, having pleaded guilty to eight attacks that began in New York City in the summer of 1976.

The upcoming series, which is directed by Joshua Zeman, looks into the work of journalist Maury Terry, who spent decades trying to prove that the string of murders were conducted by more than one perpetrator.

Netflix posted the new trailer on Twitter, accompanying the clip with the message: ‘When David Berkowitz was arrested in 1977, New York City breathed easy now that the monster behind the Son of Sam killings was behind bars.

‘But one man has spent decades trying to prove that Berkowitz didn’t act alone.’

The killer, who was dubbed the .44 Caliber Killer in the press and gave himself the moniker Son of Sam, was previously played by Oliver Cooper in the 2019 series Mindhunter.

It’s the latest true crime docuseries to arrive on the platform, after Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel captivated viewers earlier this year.

The Sons of Sam will be made available on Netflix on May 5.
