Director Aneesh Chaganty’s “Screenlife” thriller Searching is getting a sequel, reportedly set to tell an entirely new story, and Deadline reports today that Nia Long has signed on.
Storm Reid (“Euphoria”) had previously been announced, with the cast also including Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, Megan Suri and Tim Griffin.
Will Merrick & Nick Johnson will direct for Sony’s Stage 6 Films. Merrick and Johnson, the site’s report notes, were part of the editorial team on the first movie.
The film will “tell a different story from the original,” with Merrick and Johnson also writing the script based on a story by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty.
Deadline adds, “Searching 2‘s plot is still under wraps, but it will feature a new set of characters and an evolved Screenlife thriller format where the story plays out on the screens of the characters’ devices. The original starred John Cho as a dad who breaks into his daughter’s computer when she goes missing, in a desperate attempt to track her down.”
Natalie Qasabian, Chaganty, Sev Ohanian, and Timur Bekmambetov will produce.
