Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was thrilled with the performance of Luke Shaw during Sunday’s win over Manchester City, especially given the influential left-back was almost forced to miss the victory at the Etihad Stadium

The England international has arguably been his side’s most consistent performer this season having overcome the injury issues that had plagued his Old Trafford career.

Shaw has risen admirably to the challenge of competing for a first team spot with summer signing Alex Telles and will almost certainly be named in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad ahead of the upcoming friendlies against San Marino and Albania.

The 25-year-old played a starring role in Sunday’s win over the champions-elect, capping a fine individual performance with a rare goal. Shaw’s participation, however, was in doubt right up until the pre-match warm-up with Telles on standby to start.

‘Absolutely incredible, he was a massive doubt after the warm-up,’ Solskjaer revealed in his post-match press conference.

‘He needed to do the warm-up to be clear to play, Alex was ready to play. Luke’s performance was top. He’s aggressive he’s hard to play against one-on-one
when he goes forward on those runs he’s unstoppable.

‘He’s improved so much, he’s improving all the time and I’m delighted for him.’

The victory saw United climb to within 11 points of the summit, but despite ending City’s 21-game winning streak, Solskajer fears hopes of reeling in the runaway leaders have already evaporated with 10 games remaining.

He added: ‘They [Manchester City] are so far ahead you can’t really think about anything but making sure we win our games and be better than last year. We were third so we want to move up the table of course.’
