Student shows what it’s like to go to school in a former Macy’s store

When does school not feel like school? When it’s in a department store.

That’s the story of Burlington High School in Vermont, U.S, which has relocated into a new area – specifically inside a Macy’s department store.

As students come back to school premises and in-person learning resumes, they have plenty of new areas to get acquainted with, which includes features left behind by the retailer.

There are Levi’s jeans adverts in classrooms, a jewellery section next to the escalators, Ralph Lauren signs and a Michael Kors stand in the canteen.

There are also ‘fitting rooms’ signs dotted around the store-cum-school.

One student documented the whole thing on her TikTok where she couldn’t believe her new school premises.

Miranda Jung uploaded a video where she walked around, going up escalators and showing the residue labels.

She also showed how the perfume section had been transformed into a library.

An American news channel reported that the conversion took 10 weeks and had a $10 million (£7m) budget.

Burlington closed its old premises back in September last year and is planning to use the new Macy’s space as a temporary location for up to three years.

Their duration in the converted store also depends on how long it takes to clean and renovate the grounds.

Students seem happy to be back in class and are enjoying their new location.

Aria Batten, 16, told BuzzFeed News: ‘Honestly it feels genuinely better than the old BHS campus. You can truly feel how much time and effort went into building it.

‘They truly thought out the safety and construction behind it, and it makes me feel really good.’

Other social media users also commented that the move was a positive one.

One person wrote on a YouTube video of the school: ‘Actually the school looks very nice. It great to see a use of an existing structure that is more environmentally friendly for the students and seems very safe.

‘Once they make it more homey with painting or student’s artwork it will feel very much like a school. I like to see the use of old retail instead of sitting empty doing nothing.’
