Thomas Tuchel critical of Chelsea forwards after FA Cup final defeat

Thomas Tuchel was critical of his side’s wastefulness during their FA Cup final defeat against Leicester City.

Youri Tielemans’ stunning strike shortly past the hour mark proved to be the decisive moment at Wembley, as the Foxes enjoyed their first ever victory in the world’s oldest domestic cup competition.

Tuchel has done little wrong since succeeding Frank Lampard in January, but could only watch on in frustration as his side squandered a number of promising positions, especially in the opening period.

The German even turned away in disgust at one point when Timo Werner opted to shoot instead of feed an unmarked teammate and possibly lived to regret his decision not to include his top goalscorer Tammy Abraham in the matchday squad.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Tuchel cited his team’s lack of experience as a reason to suggest they were not the overwhelming favourites many pundits considered them to be.

But after the defeat he pointed out that players such as Werner, 25, and Hakim Ziyech, 28, could not use a lack of big-game nous for their underwhelming displays.

He said: ‘In decision making in the first half we were a bit too hectic, we went too straight up front. We wanted to force the solution too fast.

‘We had some unnecessary ball losses and some imprecise decision making because we created some two against two and three against three situations, they were way more promising than what we made of it.

‘We can do better even if we are experienced or not. But I could feel it was a bit too hectic. Not sure if it was something to do with our age. Hakim is not so young a player, Timo is also not so young. But we can improve there.’
