Spider season is upon us, with entomologists estimating that there are thousands of the creepy crawlies in your house right now.

That means the arachnophobes among us have an uphill battle if they want to rid their homes of the eight-legged beasts.

At least they can rest assured knowing that despite the large size of some arachnids, most species in the UK are completely harmless.

But how big do they get in the UK, and what is the largest type of spider in the world?

Male cardinal spiders have been recorded with an eyewatering 12 cm leg span.

The name ‘cardinal’ was appropriated from a legend that dates back to the 14th century when Cardinal Wolsey was scared by the spider at Hampton Court.

The spider is fairly rare, but is most commonly in the south of England.

Cardinal spiders live in buildings or walls.

Giant house spiders certainly live up to their name, growing around 12cm in length.

This spider is the one you will see most common in the autumn.

The giant house spider lives in sheds, attics, homes, and outbuildings.

These are large spiders, especially the females, whose bodies can be nearly 2cm long.

They live in hedgerows and the long grass.

The four spot spider can be seen in the UK in tall grass during the summer and autumn.

They have four white spots on their back giving them their name.

Although these spiders aren’t particularly large, with females reaching 1.7 cm in length, they are the heaviest.

UK spiders are dwarfed compared to the big boys found elsewhere in the world.

The top three largest spiders in the world are as follows:

  1. Huntsman spiders – 30cm
  2. Brazilian salmon pink bird-eating tarantula – 25cm
  3. The Goliath birdeater – 13cm
